In person meeting on Wednesday & key dates

Next in-person meeting: 19 August

Goodness, the weather we’ve had lately has been something. As a result we couldn’t complete all of our rebellion planning day, so instead I’d like to invite you to another in-person meeting happening this Wednesday 19 August at Stratford Park Bandstand at 6:30pm.

We’ll be meeting outdoors (but under cover) and following social distancing guidelines so please join us if you are able.

Rebellion diary – dates and times

I’ve added a new page to the website which covers what’s happening and when over the August/September rebellion. We have a number of actions/key events happening between 28 August and 5 SeptemberYou can view all the information on what’s happening here.

Rebellion planning & new Red Rebels coordinator needed

Outdoor rebellion planning 15 August Wallbridge Stroud 2pm to 5pm

The rebellion is getting close now, so I thought in this newsletter I could help with some ideas of how to get rebellion ready.

Idea 1: Come to our rebellion planning meeting

Our meeting at Wallbridge tomorrow 15 August will be where we as a Stroud group will plan what we want to do for our local rebellion. We’ll meet at 2pm to 5pm, with lunch and samba band at 1pm.

If you’d like to have your say about what actions we do in and around Stroud and Gloucestershire on 29 to 31 of August, this is the best way to find out the latest info. We’ll discuss actions that are being actively planned, organise into affinity groups (the people we’ll go with to the rebellion with) and decide which city we want to go to for the national rebellion that starts on September 1.

I’ll do my best to summarise key points here and on the website, but the best way to find out exactly what’s happening is to come along.

Idea 2: Read the 2020 rebellion handbook

If you’re unable to make the meeting but need a little help getting up to speed, have a read of this great 2020 rebellion handbook. It gives you information on our aims for this rebellion, protesting safely with Covid-19, checklists, training to have ready, and key links to check out (like links to the Telegraph app that will be used to communicate to rebels in real time).

Stroud Red Rebels group is looking for a new coordinator

Sadly, I have to pass on the news that Rebecca has to step down as Stroud Red Rebels coordinator. So our local Red Rebels group is looking for an existing Red Rebel to step up and take this role.

As a result the group is unable to train new members at this time, but they hope to open this up again in the future. Rebecca is able to provide a handover for anyone that can do this crucial role, so please contact us if you are interested.

However, there will be a small group of self organised Stroud Red Rebels available for the rebellion.

That’s all for now dear rebel, hope to see you tomorrow.

Join our outdoor meeting on Saturday 15 August

What do we do? Event banner

Here’s more information on our outdoor meeting on 15 August as promised. If you’ve been waiting to return to XR Stroud and haven’t been able to yet, this date will be the perfect time to return.

We’ll be meeting at 2pm to 5pm at Wallbridge Green on Saturday 15 August. Lunch will be provided at 1pm for those that would like to join us. Then our meeting starts at 2pm to discuss:

  • Local rebellion planning for the August bank holiday weekend
  • Our plans for the national rebellion starting on 1 September in London, Cardiff and Manchester
  • Affinity group setup and reformation
  • Action planning for both of the phases above.

You can find out more about our outdoor meeting on this event page, or sign up for the Facebook even if you prefer.

Our weekly meetings on Zoom are still available here on Wednesdays too.

Hope to see you then dear rebel.

Save the date – 15 August for outdoor meeting

We are planning an outdoor meeting on August 15 to organise affinity groups and other rebellion planning for the August and early September rebellion.

We’ll kick this off with an XR stall in Stroud on Aug 8 to raise awareness and encourage other non members to come. Additionally, XR Samba Stroud will be playing for some of this stall time between 10am and midday. Please contact us if you are interested in helping run the stall. Or just come along on the day it would be lovely to see you.

Want to know more about the upcoming rebellion?

Then use this link to sign up for XR Southwest updates on Telegram. If you aren’t sure what it is, Telegram is an encrypted messaging app with a bunch of handy features, and is also XR UK’s primary method of communication across the country, within regions, and within local groups too. The link above, provided the app is installed, will automatically take you to the broadcast channel and ask you to join.

For those that don’t have Telegram (don’t worry it’s a free app) and you can get it on your phone and desktop too on:

Upcoming action planning & 2040 film

It was wonderful to see you at last nights meeting. If you weren’t able to make it we’d love to see you on Zoom. Here’s how to come to next weeks meeting.

Come back for our awakening

It’s a ~perfect~ time to come back to XR Stroud too because we’re starting planning for the upcoming local rebellion at the end of August culminating in a UK-wide action starting Sept 1st in London, Cardiff and Manchester. We need you to make our local actions in and around Stroud as good as they can be. We can’t let things slide back to business as usual. We need a considerate, sustainable future that works for all of us and not for some of us.

Need some positive inspiration?

There’s still about a day left to register for the remote showing of 2040, an inspirational sustainability film. Please register on Eventbrite here, and you’ll be sent a link to the film to watch from your home on Friday 24. Following the film screening you’ll be sent a link to a Zoom Q&A panel featuring the following amazing guests:

Gail Bradbrook – Extinction Rebellion
Jojo Mehta
Sarah Lennon – Extinction Rebellion

That’s it for now, hope you see you soon.
